I Can't Hear You

“Miles, tell your sister it’s time for dinner,” Kendra said. “Jen, come here! Mom said it was time for dinner, he yelled from the bottom of the stairs. Miles went back into the kitchen and sat down. Kendra and Miles sat down at the dinner table, waiting for Jen. “Where is your sister?” “Beats me. Maybe she’s on the phone with Brad.” “Please go tell her it’s time to eat.” Miles walks up the stairs this time and yells to Jen from outside her bedroom door. He got no answer. He opened the door and realized his sister had her earbuds in and had her back toward the door because she was doing homework. He walked over to her and tapped her on the shoulder. She looked up with a frightened look on her face. “You scared me,” she said. “Mom said it’s time for dinner.” “I’ll be down in a minute.” In this scenario, Miles tried getting Jen’s attention, but because she was distracted and couldn’t hear him, she didn’t realize he was calling her. It wasn’t until Miles got closer to Jen and removed the distraction that she could listen to what he was saying to her. I believe there are times when we are so distracted by life, situations, and other things going on that we can’t hear God. The closer we are to God, the better we can listen to what he says to us. If all we do is say a quick dinner time prayer or a quick prayer before we leave our houses, we won’t be able to hear if God has an assignment for us. You may have your heart set on going to a particular grocery store down the street. Still, through prayer, God may reveal to you he wants you to go to another grocery store ten minutes away because maybe there will be someone you may be able to help or even share the gospel. How close we are to God depends on how clearly, we hear what he’s saying or if we even hear him at all.
