Unashamed
Location- Classroom
(Trevor is seated with his headphones in listening to music. A few of his friends walk over and sit next to him and he removes his headphones)
Tony:
So how was your summer? Did you go to any parties?
Trevor:
No, I went to summer youth camp.
Michael:
Like a church youth camp?
Trevor:
Yeah. It was awesome!
Tony:
Since when do you do church?
Trevor:
Since, the summer. My parents forced me to go and it was great! I had a great time! I got saved and everything. I feel like God is calling me to be a counselor.
Michael:
Saved from what? Counselor?
Tony:
Really? Since when do you care about other people’s problems?
(Michael and Tony chuckled)
Tony:
My parents couldn’t force me to go to church camp even if they tried. My summer on the other hand was less lame. I went on vacation with my older brother Jeremy to California. It was lit! We went to some pretty crazt parties out there. Let’s just say they really know how to turn up in Cali.
(Michael and Tony chuckled)
Michael:
Yeah, man that does sound cool. I went to a ton of parties over the summer too. They were amazing!
(Trevor forced a smile, but really wasn’t interested in hearing about their summer partying)
Tony:
Did y’all hear that Stacey from math class is having a back to school party this weekend?
Michael:
Yeah, are you going?
Tony:
Fa sho’. I heard that Heather might be there. So yeah, I’m definitely going.
Trevor:
I’m hanging out with my friends from youth camp this weekend. We’re having game night.
Michael:
Dude, are you really turning down Stacey’s party to go to a church game night? That’s lame.
(Tony and Michel shook their heads)
Trevor:
You guys should come. It’ll be a lot of fun.
Tony:
Naw man, I’m good. I’m going to Stacey’s party Saturday.
(Mrs. Thomas walks in the classroom)
Mrs. Thomas:
Welcome back class. I hope everyone had a fantastic summer! I’m starting something new with my classes this year. I have a question that I would like you all to answer. I will call on a few of you to present their thoughts to the class. Being that this is writing 101. I want you all to take out your journals and write. Mrs. Thomas wrote the word “Bold” on the chalkboard. When you think of the word, “Bold,” what does that mean to you? I will give you majority of the class time to write out your thoughts and if time permits maybe someone can share their thoughts with the class. You may begin.
(Trevor’s thoughts):
“Being bold, what does that mean to me? I honestly feel that there were a lot of bold people in the Bible. I remember in camp we read about Jeremiah and others that were bold in their faith.
(Trevor began to write)
(Sometime later)
Mrs. Thomas:
Alright, put your pens down. Class is almost over. Does anyone want to share their thoughts?
Trevor:
I would
(Trevor stands up and reads his response)
Trevor:
I recently came back from camp and I had a great experience. There were countless people in the Bible that displayed boldness. Being bold to me means, running after our calling even if you feel like you’re not good enough. I remember hearing the story of Jeremiah. God chose him for a special purpose, but he felt that because he was too young he couldn’t complete the task at hand for which God called him to do. At first Jeremiah felt inadequate to do what God called him to do. God equipped Jeremiah to run after the calling he had on his life. It took boldness for Jeremiah to answer that call and do what God wanted him to do, but he did it.
(Trevor took his seat)
(Michael and Tony looked at each confused.)
Tony (whispered):
Who is this guy?
Michael (whispered):
I don’t know. There’s definitely something different about him.
Mrs. Thomas:
Thank you for that response Trevor.
(The bell rang)
Mrs. Thomas:
Class you’re dismissed.
(Trevor stays behind)
(The rest of the class left, and Mrs. Thomas walked over to Trevor’s desk.)
Trevor:
How did you know you wanted to teach?
Mrs. Thomas:
I felt that this was something God had called me to do. At first, I was very insecure being that I was young and never really been around children. I was originally going to school for accounting, but I felt that tug at my heart from God to go for teaching.
Trevor: Wow! Were you scared to answer what God called you to do?
Mrs. Thomas:
Yes. I questioned if this was what God really called me to do. As I stepped out on faith God lied everything up just perfectly. Doors opened that I thought could never open. God provided me every step of the way.
Trevor:
I think my friends think I’ve changed and the truth is I have. I feel like a new person!
Mrs. Thomas: I would say yes you have changed, but that’s just apart of growing up and being who God called you to be.
Trevor:
You’re right. From now on I am going to be totally free to be who God is calling me to be. Thank you so much for talking with me. I really appreciate it!
Mrs. Thomas:
Anytime. See you tomorrow.
(Trevor grabbed his backpack and exited the classroom)
